Daily call is an English telephone lesson company. As the name says you call the student every day and give them a short 5-10 lesson in English. It's also a great option for teachers living in very rural areas where it may be difficult to pick up extra work. The lessons are short so it also seems great for any English teacher who wants to pick up another part-time job, but doesn't have enough time.

I once interviewed with this company and they were polite and helpful. I could only work one hour a day, and they advised that it wouldn't be worth my while if they could only provide me with one student. The advised me that it would be better if I could work more than one hour a day. They also seem to prefer you having your own home phone.

This company is probably best for students, or people who spend long periods of time at home or places where they can easily teach English on the phone.

Monthly income: $300- $1000 according to the website. They pay once a month through PayPal.

The great thing about this website is that it’s really easy to work around your own schedule, and being an Internet job you can work where you want, when you want. They even have text based chat and correction lessons, so you can even work during your commute.

The Skype lessons are also very easy to book during your own free time. You can select your own time slots on the Internet and wait for students to select your lesson, but you can only do so two days in advance. You will also be penalized 200 yen for every Skype lesson that you cancel.

The negative part about this site is that the pay is a little low and the Japanese yen hasn’t been too great recently. The rates have raised a few times, so they may continue to do so in the future.

There are also times when there are more teachers working that students taking lessons so it can become difficult to generate income, which doesn’t make this site a reliable main job. This site is probably not enough to live off, but it seems like a great site job where you can make some extra cash. I have been working a little in my free time and I can usually generate about $100 a month. It’s also great for anyone who wants to speak with Japanese people and learn more about Japan.

Cafe Talk

Another Skype lesson website that I recently stumbled across is Café talk. They also offer lesson in various languages and subjects such as music, origami, fitness, and health, so it’s a great play to go if you are interested in learning a new hobby or want to try teaching something different.

This site seems to offer a little more freedom and you are free to decide your own lessons, time and costs, and then wait for a student to pick your lesson. The lessons are paid for in points that the students purchase from the site, so you don’t need to worry about credit cards or bank transfers. The site pays you via Paypal once a month.

You are also reliant on students choosing your lesson, so it may take a while before you get enough students to start making a decent amount of money. They do also take money from your lesson fee (about 40%-15%) Which I thought was a bit much since they’re only providing a service between you and the students. It does seem that they will try and promote you to the students, so it may be a good way to start working as a tutor if you don’t have much experience. Here is a video about a tutor here.

Overall you can make more money by requiting your own students in person, but it doesn’t seem like a bad part-time job (and a nice chance to make some interesting lessons), and even I’m considering trying it out.

Mail Pal

I also recently came across this other company called Mail Pal which seems to pay you for exchanging emails to people in Japan in order to teach them English. Sort of like a pen pal. It seems like a nice side job, and because it's email it might be easier to manage around other work.

They pay once a month via Paypal which is easy to manage, but apparently they won't tell you about the salary until they hire you so I can't give you any further information.
